Figure–ground (perception) Figure–ground organization is a type of perceptual grouping which is a vital necessity for recognizing objects through vision. In Gestalt psychology it is known as identifying a figure from the background.
Figure Ground perception is an example of Gestalt Psychology, an idea that the whole is different than the sum of its parts. By looking at the example, one may see a collection of shoes but becaus of figure ground perception, one can also observe a heart. Therefore, the whole picture is different than the sum of its parts.
